Hiya loyal fans

Yeah yeah i know i haven't blogged for a while. The reason? I'm actually busy! I have to balance my research, two grant proposals, an exam, and a bit of a social life. And blogging is at the bottom of my criteria list. I mean i'd love to talk about it but i just don't have the time to write about my ski trip, my conversion to atheism, my A- in the systems neuroscience course, the "Oops! I did it again" karaoke, and a lot of other irrelevant things in my life.

So yeah.

Spring Break? Wtf is that?

Next week is spring break, apparently. Next week is also my systems neuroscience exam week. Can you fucking believe that? Now i didn't really expect to have vacations for spring break, but exams?

So i guess i ain't coimng to Texas, Roly.

All i got to look forward to now is St. Patrick's day. Which reminds me - i gotta go buy a green shirt and practise my Irish accent.

Nerves conduct sound?!

I came across this yesterday. Let me copy-paste some of the lines from the article:

The common view that nerves transmit impulses through electricity is wrong and they really transmit sound, according to a team of Danish scientists.
The Copenhagen University researchers argue that biology and medical textbooks that say nerves relay electrical impulses from the brain to the rest of the body are incorrect....
...According to the traditional explanation of molecular biology, an electrical pulse is sent from one end of the nerve to the other with the help of electrically charged salts that pass through ion channels and a membrane that sheathes the nerves. That membrane is made of lipids and proteins.
Heimburg and Jackson theorize that sound propagation is a much more likely explanation. Although sound waves usually weaken as they spread out, a medium with the right physical properties could create a special kind of sound pulse or "soliton" that can propagate without spreading or losing strength....

What surprised me most is the amount of hits you will get if you google "nerves use sound, not electricity", with so many people discussing about the impact of this new finding, on various discussion forums. Am i one of the very few people on this earth who considers this not a "breaking news" but more like a "shitload of bullcrap"? I mean c'mon! Every physiologist/neuroscientist KNOWS that nerves conduct electricity. And no self-respecting biophysicist would even dare say the contrary. So what did really happen? Why is this article out there all over the internet?

My guess is one of the following:
1) The journalist of the article misinterpreted the findings of the biophysicists from the University of Copenhagen, OR
2) The biophysicists decided it would make for a good laugh to mess with the journalist.

So if you have reached this page because you googled "nerves use sound, not electricity" and wanted to know more about this amazing discovery, let me tell you this. This is just a shitload of bullcrap.

Anyway, screw this. I'm going to watch 300 tonight. Apparently, the movie gives your eyes an orgasm. THIS IS SPARTAAA!!

What's with all the March birthdays?

A couple of months ago i came out with my explanation about why there were so many October babies (click here). Apparently, October isn't the only month with a high birth-rate. Have you guys noticed the number of March birthdays? So here i go again. No, i'm too lazy to format it into a research paper style like i did the last time. All i will say is this. There are so many March birthdays because a lot of people screw around in June. This would be because of the fucking rains in India during June! No really! Roads get flooded, the railways are halted...so what does everyone do? They stay at home and screw. Yeah. Now you know. If you are a March baby, it's because your parents were stuck at home because of the heavy rain, and had nothing better to do than make you.

Oh you're feeling offended? Well, do i look like i fucking care?

And in a totally unrelated subject, happy birthday Mummy.
:P
